Book Review: Anni Dreams of Biryani

Anni Dreams of BiryaniAnni Dreams of Biryani by Namita Moolani Mehra
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Even though I’m a grown-up, I found the story amusing and fun – with a good building of tension in little Anni’s challenge! The artwork is great – the colors are rich, the characters personalities come through, and the buildings and scenery set just the right mood. Children, especially budding foodies, will love Anni and her quest for the best Biryani ever.

I pondered my star rating, and sadly settled on three stars due to the very bad decision to *not* include a Biryani recipe in this book. Children will be frustrated that they can’t see a Biryani recipe, and use it (with parental supervision of course) themselves. A link to a recipe on the internet is included, but that’s absolutely not sufficient or appropriate for a child. Even if it was, websites don’t last forever, and they sometimes rearrange their contents, which breaks links. I strongly recommend that a second edition be issued with a good biryani recipe included.

Also, my Amazon First Reads copy is digital… and VERY difficult to read in that format. I highly recommend buying a physical copy of this book.
