If you were lucky, you got to share a meal with friends at the Traveler’s Club International Restaurant & Tuba Museum. If you missed out, take heart! Here’s a book stuffed with memories, success stories, regrets, struggles (a lot of struggles) and always… always a passion and love for a wonky little place in Okemos, Michigan, and the people who worked there, or patronized the place.

I’m sure you can tell by its name that this was a one-of-a-kind restaurant. I was lucky enough to have dinner there one night with my husband and a friend visiting from overseas. I wish we’d gone more often. We kept saying we should, but our procrastination prevented it.

If you remember the restaurant, here’s a great collection of memories and stories – and recipes, hurrah! If you never got to visit, you can take a mental journey back in time through the storytelling. Either way, it’s good for your soul. Play some tuba music in the background while you read. (There’s plenty on YouTube if you search.)

Lori Alden Holuta lives between the cornfields of Mid-Michigan, where she grows vegetables and herbs when she’s not writing, editing, or playing games with a cat named Chives.
