Book Review: The Witch’s House

The Witch's House: Fast paced mystery! The Witch’s House: Fast paced mystery! by H.G. Ahedi
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Author H.G. Ahedi’s confident writing style quickly grabs you by the hand and pulls you along on the search for The Witch’s House. Private Detective Angelus Walker has come to Elderwood to find a missing child. Little Irene Linden isn’t the first kid in town to go missing, either. But questioning the locals just gives him crazy stories about a local witch and her creepy house. Angelus figures that behind the urban legend there might be some grain of truth, so he sets out to find what turns out to be a very elusive house.

The story is precisely as long as it needs to be, and can be read in one or two sittings. The author clearly knows how to take command of the written word. I was impressed from the start by her crafting of sentences, with every description and conversation bringing the story to life. The story is rounded out with enough characters to make it feel realistic, and each brings something of value to the plot.

If you aren’t a big horror fan, relax. There’s no gore. The story is carried by suspense, emotion and atmosphere. You’ll be fine. I’ll be recommend it to my friends who do love horror anyway, as they could use a good dose of fine writing and the craft of storytelling.

Lori Alden Holuta lives between the cornfields of Mid-Michigan, where she grows vegetables and herbs when she’s not writing, editing, or playing games with a cat named Chives.
