Book Review: At the Ragtag Hotel: The Elevator Ride

At the Ragtag Hotel: The Elevator RideAt the Ragtag Hotel: The Elevator Ride by Freya Novak
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

How many animals can fit into an elevator on a hot, hot day? And why do they all want to go to the fourteenth floor? That’s the amusing premise to this unusual adventure.

Children will be amused by the expressions on the various animals faces as they react to the heat and squish themselves into an increasingly crowded elevator. There’s so much to look at, and fun details to study in this silly, action-packed story.

Four opportunities to learn how to say hello or good morning in other languages are tucked into the text near the start of the story. These words are printed in a funny, friendly font that stands out from the rest of the text. Dotted lines lead from those words to their English translation. It’s a non-overwhelming introduction to the concept of other languages. Perhaps this gentle lesson will prompt interest in learning more about how people talk in other countries.

I found the book charming, and as the “fun auntie”, I would be delighted to gift it to the youngest members of my family.

Lori Alden Holuta lives between the cornfields of Mid-Michigan, where she grows vegetables and herbs when she’s not writing, editing, or playing games with a cat named Chives.
